Travel time

We left for Da Nang, Vietnam on Saturday morning not quite sure we would get into the country with my husband and two sons. For some reason we thought we wouldn’t need a visa if we were staying less then 30 days. We were wrong, and realized it just six hours after the Tet holiday lay marking the lunar New Year began, closing government offices for ten days.

Needless to say Friday was a huge stress day. Lisa was at a conference for work, and Mark was left to figure out how we could possibly get in.

We were flying Toronto to Detroit, to Seoul, South Korea then on to the final stop Da Nang, Vietnam (nearly 28 hours later). To change flights in Seoul would cost us nearly $2200 each - so that was a NO CAN DO. We decided that if we couldn't get a visa we would stay in Seoul. Korea would be amazing to see, though not the surfing beach vacation we had in mind as it was still around zero degrees in Seoul. Funny enough Lisa had just gone for Korean BBQ and Karaoke on Thursday night - so maybe it was a sign!

Mark finally found an agency that agreed to take us on! For a fee we could have the visas made and a person would meet us at the airport. We needed passport photos, and to fill out some forms. It was nutty as this was happening at 9pm the night before we were leaving. We had tried to cancel the hotel in Da Nang but they refused, so we would be out the last flight and a hotel for three nights if we didn't make it. The fees were worth paying to get us there!

If it was a scam we'd find out in Korea and just stay there. We scrambled to make our own passport photos. Oh boy the adventure begins!!!
