Looking like a tombraider at Angkor Wat
Visiting Angkor Wat is incredible. The (very bad) movie Tombraider was filmed here, and it really does like like this crazy movie set. We hired a TukTuk driver to take us around the temples as they are vast and far between in some cases and it’s hot! In order to really look the part of a tough explorer I am currently sporting a lovely black eye. It got considerably worse and spread a bit into the second eye as the day went on. I really look like an explorer now!
Hey
We got picked up at 8am (eye slightly swollen as bruised) and went to buy our passes, which are a ways out from the temples. Kids under 12 are free with a passport so we ended up coming back to
Our apartment to get his passport before heading to the temples. For the passes we got a three day pass as there is just so much to see. It was pretty awesome that they make you take your hat and glasses off and take your photo for the pass. The eye is looking good!
It was designed in the first half of the 12th century and dedicated to Vishnu and god of the universe! Supreme being of hindu and Buddhist beliefs.
We then went to the main temple Angkor Wat which has a HUGE man made more that is perfectly square and lake size surrounding it. The outer wall is 1km around. It’s incredible. Our tuk tuk driver dropped us off and we walked across the floating dock bridge to explore. It’s so beautiful. I wish we’d had a guided tour as there are so many things that I just don’t know about this place. Luckily we got the passes for two more days so we can research and come back.
There are giant carvings on the walls that the kids and I read as stories of war with different regions and the striving for peace. The art is beautiful.
There are also monks at the shrines throughout the temple who will give you blessings and shower you with holy water for a donation. It was cool to watch. It’s really such a stunning place.
My favourite temples were the ones the trees have taken back. The trees are so beautiful and tall with great roots the swell around the temples. The trees seem bend backward into the temple centre it’s incredible.
This is the area where Tomb Raider with Angelina Jolie was made (huge respect to her for really meeting with the people and understanding this country - this is where her United Nations and anti-mine companies began). So I think it was pretty awesome that my mishap in the pool yesterday made me look with a real tough Tombraider today. I was looking pretty tough I tell you.
I couldn’t stop taking photos - this place is truly beautiful and you need three days. We saw three temples and had lunch and were done by 2:30. The heat is insane but there’s so much more to explore! The last temple was a small version of Angkor Wat that we climbed to the top ( it was a little scary at times). I made the mistake of going down the opposite stairs from the top and they were so hot but it was so steep I was grasping each step with my hands as and crawled down. So hot!
We called it a day and are planning to return Thursday as there’s only so
Much our brains could take with the heat and the continued bruising of my eye. By the days end the colour had spread to a real dark red and blue. Keenan said it looked like I was wearing face paint. Pretty awesome!
