Enjoy every sandwich. Today was not what we expected.

My sincere and heartfelt condolences to the wife and family who lost someone they loved very much today. Many hands kept his heart beating for a long time. While visiting quite possibly one of the most beautiful waterfalls on earth a man fell ill while we were swimming in the same pool.

I was in the water at the waterfall with the kids in the water when I noticed Mark looking at a man who was being dragged from the water. It was very surreal as no one yelled for help but as people noticed him being pulled out others joined in carrying him to shore. No doctors were present but many people started to take turns doing cpr giving him breathes and chest compressions. Taking turns, constantly for over an hour as we waited for the ambulance. It was awful seeing so many try to save his life. His wife and I rubbed his legs to try our best to keep him with us.

The kids were great and sat quietly holding our stuff. A group of young bagpackers were truly amazing! They stepped right up without a thought and did all they could. Many people shamed and scolded the few who were taking videos and pictures. Most people are good and truly only wanted nothing but to have this man to wake up.

Mark is amazing. He never ever hesitates to help people. He was one of the first to drop all of our cameras and bags and try to help this man. He is such a great person we are lucky to have him.

The hospital was over an hour away and no one on site appeared to have any first aid training. It was very much at the hands of those who happened to be there. Pretty nuts really. It took over 40minutes for oxygen to come.

One of the women who was amazing and took charge was getting very mad that people were standing around watching and not helping. Looking back on the situation I truly believe it’s because they have never been educated about first aid and cpr. Most of the locals and tourist from Asia I just don’t think have had the same training or knowledge that many westerns have had. We are so lucky in many ways that we don’t even realize. Today was a reminder of that. We also haven’t seen nearly as much death.

If someone would like to start a new organization to help people, it would great to provide training in first aid and CPR to people working in Asia. Get these parks defibrillators (yes I know they are expensive but life is worth more). The park never even closed, it just kept letting people in, and the nurses who came from the nursing station just outside th park didn’t seem to know what to do. They put a pulse tracker on his finger and that was it. So much needs to be done. We all felt so helpless. I wish we’d known what more we could have done.

On our way out an ambulance did speed by which we believe was him and his family getting care finally. But it was very, very late coming. It was very frustrating for everyone taking turns pumping his heart and doing all they could.

We are reminded today why we are on this trip. You need to love the ones you have and live the life you can, while you have it. I’m so sorry for this family. We will all be doing serious first aid training on our return. I truly wish I could have done more. Our hearts are heavy tonight. Love every breath. I’m so sorry this happened. My heart goes out to her, and all of those who will miss him in their lives.
