Beware of the attacking monkeys
The grand loop of Angkor Watt includes Preah Khan and Neal Pean which are further out from Angkor Watt temple and a little less busy. We started with Angkor Thom I the morning to avoid the extreme heat and crowds. It’s amazing as there are faces all over the temple spires and monkeys climbing all over it. Keenan was quite envious as he said he’d love to climb this place too!
We got there as the crowds were just beginning so a ton of monkeys were making there way across the temple and over to the far field. As they came across the temple one monkey jumped on a woman’s head and started trying to take her sunglasses. He husband tried to shoo the monkey off of her head but the monkey swiped back at him. Then the monkey reached around the woman’s back and grabbed the croissant hanging from a bag off of her backpack. It them leapt up on top of a statue and ripped the bag open eating its treat. Smart little monkeys!!
After it was done it jumped down and eyed us all up, we backed away trying not to make eye contact! No way were messing with the monkeys!
Leading into many temples are stairs of people holding a massive 9 headed snake. A great example of. Many hands make idle work.
Anchor Thom was Mark’s favourite temple, mine however was Neak Pean from the day. It’s a gorgeous little water temple that you walk out to on a boardwalk from the main land. Truly amazing!
The entire Angkor area was once the size of Manhattan island a bustling prosperously massive city! Good lesson as we need to remember that great civilization s can fall.
